A surprising sturdy and good-looking dresser or small chest of drawers can be made out of cardboard apple boxes put together with duct tape and covered in contact paper. The contact paper will have to be purchased and will cost from $4 to $12, depending on the size of the roll and where it is bought. And the duct tape will cost perhaps as much as $2. The boxes, however, can be got free from any large grocery store. If asked, the produce manager will usually put boxes aside so they stay clean and don't get broken up and put in the dumpster.
A three-drawer dresser can be made with three boxes stacked one on top of the other. A double dresser requires six boxes in two stacks, each stack three drawers high. Or place three boxes side-by-side, one box high, for a toy chest for a young child.
A cardboard dresser will not stand up to heavy use. The kid can't jump on it. Grandma can't spill her cup of tea in a drawer. But with reasonable care, such a dresser will last almost as long as its equivalent made out of a wood composite.
